The UK government is set to announce that all new buildings in England will be required to install electric vehicle charge points from 2022 as the government looks to ‘toughen up’ regulations for both new homes and buildings.
Developers of supermarkets and office blocks will be required to install electric vehicle charging points, in a move that is expected to add 145,000 new charging points each year and is being seen as a major step in supporting the transition away from petrol and diesel cars.
The move forms part of the government’s push towards cleaner energy and its support for a ‘green industrial revolution’.
As part of the government’s bid to reach net zero by 2050, almost 26,000 publicly available electric vehicle charging devices have been installed, while there is a total of 250,000 points in homes and workplaces.
While the move has been welcomed critics argue that the government should be doing more in terms of driving the roll out of charging devices and ensuring that the infrastructure is truly national, especially when too many areas have been left behind.
