Mayflower Wind Hosting Community Forum For Portsmouth

By Jimmy Bentley, Patch Staff

Mayflower Wind will host a virtual community forum on Tuesday to give an overview of a proposal to build submarine cables through Portsmouth and the Sakonnet river to power its offshore wind energy farm.

The wind farm is located 30 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and could generate more than 2,400 mega-watts of clean energy, according to Mayflower. That’s enough to power more than 1 million New England homes.

Submarine cable routing from the lease area to Brayton Point in Somerset, Massachusetts is still being determined. But Mayflower Wind has proposed a cable route through federal and Rhode Island waters in the Sakonnet River, with a buried intermediate underground crossing in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and then continuing through Mount Hope Bay, and ending at the Brayton Point grid connection.

The forum is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will give residents an opportunity to review project benefits, the permitting process and ask questions.
