On the 22nd of February 2023, ESB International (ESB) delivered on two projects, the first being the energisation of one of three 25km, 66 kV submarine cable feeder circuits between Bahrain mainland and Hawar island. The second project being the switching on of the new ESB constructed Juzr Hawar 66/11 kV City Type Substation on Hawar Island, making it the first 66 kV Substation on the island.
ESB aims to energise the second and third submarine cable circuits by approximately May 2023, before installing the final concrete mattress protection on areas along the submarine cable routes.
The island has been recognised as a UNESCO and Ramsar site due to its history and importance of marine and coastal environment.
ESB is supporting the development of energy on the Island, acting on behalf of The Electricity and Water Authority of Bahrain (EWA). ESB has been tasked as the principal engineering consultant and aims to deliver a sustainable electricity supply from the Bahrain mainland Electrical Network (Durrat Al Bahrain 66 kV Substation) to Hawar Island.
