Chief information security officers (CISOs) face a challenging struggle in the constantly changing field of cybersecurity, where they must constantly improve internal capabilities while dealing with personnel shortages, financial limits, and other issues.

According to the most recent report findings from technology recruitment firm Stott and May, 34 per cent of security leaders cited a lack of internal skills as a major barrier to completing strategic initiatives. This paints a clear picture of the difficulties faced by security leaders.

The Shifting Landscape: Budget Takes the Lead

Although CISOs have always focused on internal competencies, the environment is drastically changing. According to the survey, a significant 16 per cent rise has occurred in the percentage of CISOs who see financial limitations as the biggest obstacle to carrying out their strategic roadmaps. This change highlights the mounting pressure on security chiefs to do more with less money.

According to the report, there will be a significant shift in 2023 as budgetary limitations surpass internal talents to become the biggest obstacle to plan execution. A startling 51 per cent of security leaders now see budgetary constraints as their biggest barrier to implementing strategy; the worldwide sample also identified internal skills (34%), board-level buy-in (11%), and technology (3%) as obstacles.

Critical Results And Thoughts

For security leaders, filling cybersecurity positions remains a challenge. 69 per cent of respondents are having difficulty finding candidates for their companies, which means that even after an eight-week timeframe, 69 per cent of security job openings remain empty.

CISOs report a noticeable increase in salary expectations across the cybersecurity industry. A substantial 47 per cent believe that salary levels have surged by more than 11 per cent year-on-year, while an additional 31 per cent witness wage inflation ranging between 6 and 10 per cent. This points to intensifying competition within the cybersecurity talent pool.

Strategic investments in cybersecurity are nevertheless made, notwithstanding the difficulties in acquiring personnel. However, there is limited space for experimenting as 44 per cent of security directors report budgets that are static or declining. Just 53 per cent of respondents think that security spending is keeping up with how quickly the digital business environment is evolving.

In 2023, cloud security (25%) will rank first among CISOs’ key investment areas, followed by Identity and Access Management (IAM) (20%) and security and vulnerability management (18%). These goals highlight how crucial it is to protect digital assets, verify identities, and bolster defences against new threats.

Amid financial constraints and workforce shortages, an increasing number of CISOs are addressing the need to align cybersecurity initiatives with broader business strategies. The report indicates that 55 per cent of security leaders believe their companies view cybersecurity as a strategic priority. Moreover, 60 per cent agree that the security function enhances the overall value proposition offered to clients, highlighting the growing acknowledgement of cybersecurity’s role in delivering business value.

Within the report, Founder & CEO of Hack The Box, Haris Pylarinos says, “CISOs could raise visibility around their security program by gamifying the experience for end-users; it’s about making security fun, relevant, and engaging”. Also, CISO at Crossbeam, Chris Castaldo stated, “A lack of budget. Inability to acquire the right level of internal skills. All of these things are linked to understanding the business and shaping a strong narrative that resonates with key stakeholders.”

Summary

The study about Cyber Security in Focus reveals the complex issues that contemporary security executives must deal with. Although financial limitations have taken centre stage, internal skills continue to be a major obstacle. In order to overcome these obstacles, CISOs must promote a comprehensive strategy that incorporates personnel development, financial responsibility, and alignment with larger corporate goals.

Building a robust security posture requires achieving a strategic balance between internal capabilities and financial resources as the cybersecurity world continues to change. In this complex dance, CISOs are essential to a company’s ability to remain safe in the face of growing cyberattacks.
