The total revenues transferred by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to the state treasury amounted to JD92 million(US$129,582,000) for the year 2023.

According to the communications and postal sector indicators released by the Commission, reflecting its achievements in 2023, the total customs declarations processed at the Commission’s international offices were 27,664, distributed as follows: 20,898 at airport customs, 5,004 in Aqaba, and 1,762 in Amman.

In terms of consumer grievances, the Commission received a total of 8,267 complaints, achieving a resolution rate of 94.7 per cent. These were categorized as: 5,704 complaints related to Internet services, 2,408 to cellular services, 105 to fixed-line services, and 50 to postal services.

Jordan ranked 39th globally and fourth in the Arab world in fixed Internet service speeds, with an average fixed Internet speed of 110 megabytes by the end of 2023.

The Commission issued a total of 2,788 frequency licenses cancelations, 17,534 renewals, 5,107 amendments, and 6,253 new licenses. The number of licensed telecommunications operators stood at 45, comprising 27 class licenses and 18 individual licenses.

For fixed broadband Internet services, the indicators revealed a total of 805,000 subscriptions by the third quarter of 2023, with a household penetration rate of 34 per cent. Data consumption hit 1 billion gigabytes, with leased line service subscriptions totaling 20,000 during the same period.

Mobile broadband services saw 7.9 million subscriptions in the third quarter of 2023, with a pre-payment model dominating 74 per cent of subscriptions, and post-payment accounting for 26 per cent. The penetration rate was 68 per cent relative to the population, with 85 per cent of subscriptions for voice and data, and 15 per cent for data only.

Mobile broadband traffic for the third quarter reached about 8 billion minutes, distributed over 97 per cent local and 3 per cent international calls, while the total number of sent text messages was 291 million.

The total type approval transactions for specific approvals and device insertions reached 3,590, with miscellaneous device insertion transactions totaling 2,790.

The Commission’s data indicated Jordan’s position as 7th in the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa region in the deployment of 5G services, following the Arab Gulf countries.

Fixed voice communication services subscriptions totaled 493 thousand in the third quarter of 2023, with 67 percent for residential and 33 percent for commercial sectors. Fixed-line telephone traffic amounted to 12 million minutes, divided between 12 percent international and 88 percent local calls.

In the postal sector, the total number of postal operators was 196, including 183 private/local, 12 private/international, and 1 public operator. The private postal sector employed 34,000 workers and operated 34,000 vehicles, including 4,000 bicycles.

The Commission also highlighted several achievements in excellence and leadership, securing the gold category in the Award for Buildings Accessible for People with Disabilities, second place in the public sector readiness for artificial intelligence project, the European International Accreditation Certificate ISO 27001:2013, and ranking first in the Arab countries and the Middle East in Internet Protocol/Version 6 indicators.
