Billionaire entrepreneur and Twitter chief Elon Musk on Friday said he has found a new CEO who will take over the role from him in about six weeks. Musk will transition to the role of executive chair and CTO at the social media company.

While Musk refrained from naming his heir, the Wall Street Journal reported that Comcast NBCUniversal executive Linda Yaccarino was in discussion for the job.

Meanwhile, Musk will move to the role of executive chair and chief technology officer (CTO) to oversee product, software and sysops.

Recently, Twitter and NBCUniversal announced expanded partnership on Olympics Coverage ahead of the 2024 in Paris. As per the deal, NBCUniversal will share highlights from the games on social media platform and create a live Twitter show.

As the deal manifested, Yaccarino tweeted Musk that Twitter should bring back its ‘Periscope’. She also interviewed Musk at the Possible 2023 marketing event in Miami.

Yaccarino has been at NBCUniversal since 2011, after a 15-year stint at Turner Entertainment. She has been lauded for her work leading the network’s ad sales operation into the digital future.

Musk’s Leadership

Musk’s pursuit, followed by a USD 44 billion takeover and leadership at Twitter has affected the platform in several major levels. Under his leadership, the social media platform made a big move to higher-priced Twitter Blue subscription which came online after many trial-and-errors as the users mainly complained.

Twitter also saw a large-scale banishing of legacy verified checkmarks for users with lesser than a million followers.

Earlier, the billionaire’s Twitter acquisition and initial steps, including views on free speech, had irked many advertising businesses, who chose to exit the platform.

The billionaire’s had also fired Twitter’s previous CEO Parag Agrawal and other senior leaders quickly after acquiring the social media company. He then proceeded to layoff half of the company’s workforce in November.

Musk’s Twitter role has also come under fire at Tesla (Musk is the CEO at the electric car company), where investors have emphasised on him being distracted by the platform.

‘Always Wanted A CEO’

Despite the radical changes at Twitter, Musk has always indicated he wanted another executive to run Twitter. In December 2023, he said he would step aside as CEO once he found “someone foolish enough to take the job.” Musk had said he would transition to running Twitter’s software and servers teams.

He famously ran a poll on Twitter on whether he should step down as the platform’s CEO. The platform’s users (57.5 per cent) voted ‘Yes’. But Musk continued with his role.
