The public transit agency serving the Seattle, Washington metropolitan area, Sound Transit announced it will deploy 13 300-kW in-ground wireless chargers from InductEV for Seattle’s new Stride bus rapid transit service.

To complement this wireless charging technology, Sound Transit will also deploy 48 wirelessly charging electric buses, including 33 double-deckers from Alexander Dennis, a global bus manufacturer and subsidiary of NFI Group.

According to Sound Transit, Seattle will be the first location in North America to deploy double-decker electric buses with inductive wireless technology.

“It’s about more than just buses. It’s about transforming communities, reducing emissions, and creating greener, more efficient transportation systems,” said InductEV’s Chief Revenue Officer Brandon Anulewicz.

InductEV’s in-ground wireless charging pads avoid wired, depot-oriented charging methods that require significant real estate and electric utility assets, allowing Seattle to overcome the challenges of its limited real estate in green space community districts.

Seattle was prompted to look into the company’s charging solution after a successful launch in 2017 with Link Transit in Wenatchee, Washington. By utilizing the in-ground charging pads, Link Transit accomplished a 17-hour duty cycle and a 1:1 diesel replacement ratio for enhanced range and operational efficiency.
