One of the prominent banks in South Carolina with a significant presence across the Southeast, including Northeast Georgia, SouthState is informing its customers about a cybersecurity breach that occurred nearly two months ago, with assurances that the situation has been contained. The bank disclosed to investors and regulators on March 29 that it had identified and addressed the breach, opting to notify affected individuals.
Residents of Northeast Georgia, where SouthState maintains branches, have begun receiving notification letters outlining the breach. According to these letters, unauthorized access was gained to the bank’s network folders on February 7, 2024, compromising customer names, financial account numbers, and Social Security numbers.
In response to the breach, SouthState offers affected customers a complimentary one-year membership to an online identity theft monitoring service to detect any unauthorized use of compromised information. The bank emphasized its commitment to bolstering security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Expressing regret for any inconvenience or concern caused by the breach, SouthState assured customers of its proactive approach to addressing the situation.
