Trai’s Sharma Calls For Speedy Liberalisation Of Satcom Policy

The telecom regulator has called for fast-track liberalisation of India’s satellite communications policy to pave the way for affordable fast satellite broadband services, and, in turn, boost internet penetration in the country’s remote and far-flung corners where mobile and terrestrial networks have had a negligible impact on this score.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman R S Sharma also reiterated the regulator’s call “for an Open Sky policy in the space sector to leverage the power of global low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems” to bridge the present satellite capacity shortfalls in India and help deliver low-cost fast satellite broadband services in India.
