Lava To Launch New Smartphone Series In January: Report

Homegrown handset maker Lava is expected to launch a new smartphone series in January 2021, spread across the price range of Rs 5,000(US$67.92) to Rs 20,000, according to a report by 91Mobiles.

Lava has also shared a teaser on the microblogging platform Twitter which reads, “The game is about to change.”

However, as of now, no details have been made available by either the publication or the handset maker.

India’s telecom sector, in the efforts of enabling policies including more quantum of the spectrum, is set to establish new benchmarks in the next-generation network deployments and service delivery.

The report further claims that the launch event will be held around January 7. But no official announcement has been made by Lava till now.

ET in its 23 November edition reported that Lava International is in an advanced stage of discussions with leading Indian telcos to launch co-branded 4G smartphones which will be subsidized by the operator. With this initiative, Lava is aiming to cut down the costs of 4G smartphones sharply for the users.

It has already started making Nokia branded smartphones and is in talks with Motorola for similar tie-ups, people familiar with the matter said.

“Lava has reached an advanced level of talks with one of the telcos. Phones will be co-branded but will be subsidized by the telco,” a person said, adding that the company is in talks with all three telecom operators for the design and manufacturing of smartphones.

ET previously reported that Motorola was in talks with Dixon Technologies and Lava for a contract of manufacturing US$1 billion worth of smartphones in India.

The company is also trying to make a renewed bid for a greater presence in the Rs 6,000-10,000 smartphone segment, backed by the government’s production linked incentive scheme. https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com
