Parrot Analytics: Netflix Shows Still Topping Russian In-Demand List

By Stuart Thomson

The official non-availability of Netflix in Russia does not seem to have dented the popularity of the streamer’s content in that country, according to the latest ‘in-demand’ data from Parrot Analytics.

Parrot Analytics analyses the demand for recent popular digital titles across international markets, based on the application of artificial intelligence to expressions of demand across social media, fan sites, peer-to-peer protocols and file-sharing platforms.

Parrot’s dataset compares the demand that exists for each series in this market, against the average TV show. A difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market.

For the week from December 18-24, Stranger Things, which includes Soviet-era Russia-set scenes, topped the Parrot list for the country, scoring 31.19 times the average TV show rating.

Stranger Things was closely followed by The Witcher, also from Netflix, with a rating of 30.66 times the average show.

Despite the absence of western content from Russia, only two locally-produced shows made the top 10: Middle Lane Vampires from Start, at number three, and Trudnye Podrostki from More.TV at number five.

Netflix took six of the top 10 places. Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys and Apple TV+’s Shantaram also appeared in the list at number four and number 10 respectively.

In common with other western suppliers, Netflix pulled out of Russia in March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
