Fiji’s government revealed it has begun working with mobile network operators to eventually install 5G infrastructure, paving the way for a launch of commercial services.
The Fiji Times reported, deputy prime minister Manoa Kamikamica revealed the news with ambitions to make Fiji a technological hub in the South Pacific but did not state a timeline for the launch of 5G services. The minister was speaking at the Breakfast with Ministers event organised by the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation.
The government’s 5G plan of action will be first submitted to the cabinet for approval.
“I would like to advise that 5G is on its way to Fiji. Right now, we are issuing licences to the two players for the testing, there are some regulations we need to step through and once that’s done we will roll out the 5G network,” said Kamikamica.
Fiji has two operator players Vodafone and Digicel. The island nation currently has 95% national 3G and 4G coverage with the rest of the population to be connected in the next four years, said Kamikamica.
