Following the deteriorating security situation in his country, especially in the north, Nigerian Leader Muhammadu Buhari has given matching orders to his security chiefs to up their game, saying he cannot further tolerate the escalation of the declining security situation. Although Buhari did not say what the outcome would be should the security chiefs fail to read the handwriting on the wall, speculations are rife in both conventional and social media the security chiefs were on their way out as a result of what is perceived to be their abysmal performance.
This fact became precipitate Thursday (June 18)as Buhari engaged his security chiefs in the highest security meeting in the land attended by the service chiefs, defence chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police.
Speaking through his Security Adviser, Babagana Mongonu, Buhari acknowledged the security chiefs were trying their best but stressed this was not good enough as evidenced by deterioration in the security situation, hence the charge to all of them to step up their efforts and keep the deteriorating security situation southwards.
Part of the strategy to achieve improvement in this regard is the application of information and communication technology (ICT), and promotion of responsible use of ICT tools. Accordingly, the Nigerian Leader tasked Monguno to liaise with the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Ali Isa Ibrahim Pantami, to ensure that irresponsible use of Subscriber Identification Module(SIM) cards is eliminated from the system, meaning telecommunications sector umpire, the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) will intensify its efforts in ensuring mobile network operators (MNOs)tightened the noose on cyber criminals who ride on their networks to perpetrate acts of crime and criminality.
