EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says the ministry has developed an education emergency recovery response to support student learning amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Uguro said the ministry undertook this in partnership with Global Partners for Education (GPE) and the Australian government.
The partnership also saw the introduction of the My PNG home page with digital learning content and development of home learning packs. “We will continue to pursue these innovations to make them sustainable and systematic so that Papua New Guinean children can continue learning from wherever they are,” Uguro said.
He said each new MP had been given a tablet during induction week and others would receive theirs soon which contained education policies, plans and other relevant information.
“The tablets we issued to our teachers and students are similar and the contents are tailored towards learning. I urged MPs to buy these using DSIP (District Services Improvement Programme) funds for your schools,” Uguro told parliament last week.
He said the information communications technology (ICT) policy was focused on enabling the country to use excel in digital transformation so that each graduate was familiar with ICT and its functions and their application.
“Our standard-based ICT curriculum for students from prep to Grade 12 is being developed,” Uguro said. He said the department had also developed a national curriculum framework over the last seven years, emphasising on four subjects such as ethics, Christianity and civics and the development of ICT and financial literacy packages.
Uguro thanked GPE and the Australian government for supporting the country’s COVID-19 response in education.
