US industrial technology company Sensata Technologies said it suffered a significant ransomware attack that affected its daily manufacturing and shipping operations and compromised company data.

Headquartered in Attleboro, Massachusetts, Sensata is a leading global industrial technology company that develops, manufactures, and sells sensors, electrical protection components, and other products that are used in mission-critical systems and applications that create valuable business insights for customers and end users.

In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Sensata said that on April 6, the company suffered a significant ransomware attack that involved threat actors infiltrating the company’s internal network and deploying malware to encrypt systems, rendering them inaccessible.

The company immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the scope of the incident. It also took steps to contain the incident, including proactively taking its network offline and notified relevant law enforcement agencies about the incident.

“The incident has temporarily impacted Sensata’s operations, including shipping, receiving, manufacturing production, and various other support functions. While the Company has implemented interim measures to allow for the restoration of certain functions, the timeline for a full restoration is not yet known.

“The preliminary investigation has identified evidence that files were taken from the Company’s environment. The Company is working to identify and review the files involved and will take additional actions as appropriate based on its review, including notifying individuals and regulatory authorities in accordance with applicable law,” reads the SEC filing.

Sensata added that it does not expect this incident to have a material impact on its financial results and operations, but the full scope and impact of this incident is not yet known.

At the time of publishing, no known hacker group claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on Sensata. The company also did not share details on who was behind the attack, how much data was compromised, or whether it has received a ransom demand.
